The Fantascapes

Posted in Art, Entertainment, Music, Writing with tags , , , , , , , on August 23, 2008 by kevmoore

It’s been a while since I produced any new music, so I was pleased to help my partner, the French Artist Miki, when she asked for a short film and musical soundtrack to introduce her “Fantascape” series to the world. I love these particular art pieces that she’s created, so it was a joy to try and create a musical atmosphere to complement them.

I went for an ambient kind of percussion feel, with washes of ethereal-sounding keyboards, a mellow bass and some distant, cranked-up messy lead guitar to round it all off….Enjoy!

Leaving on a Jet Plane…Coach….Car…..you name it!

BC Sweet

That was a tough four days.  When you realise the time on stage in total is around 2 hours 45 minutes, you understand why Graham Oliver from Saxon refers to this as “the minor inconvenience”.  I left home around 3 pm on thursday, drove 2 hours to the airport, flew 2 and a half hours to Luton, spent two hours on a coach, spent an hour freezing to death in a Leicester bus station, spent another hour on a coach,  finally made it to Derby.

Grabbed a few hours sleep, dropped my sister at work so I could use the car for the weekend, drove up to North Yorkshire (another 2 and a half hours in blizzard conditions) to arrive at the gig at around 5.30pm. Soundchecked, had dinner, went onstage 10pm.

Drove down to Wakefield (1 hour, sub-zero) got into hotel for the night. Managed to spend around 4 hours with my son on Saturday before driving South (1 hour) to rendezvous with the lads again for the second gig. Soundchecked at 6pm, onstage for two shows, 9.30 and 11pm.

Drove to Derby after the show (40 minutes) slept 5 hours, got a lift from my sister down to the Coach stop. Left Derby at 08.25am, arrived Milton Keynes coach depot (not nice) around 2 hours later, and spent a further 2 hours sat there waiting for a connceting bus, which eventually took me to Luton Airport for 1.20pm. An hour later, my flight should be leaving. It’s delayed by and hour. I eventually land in Murcia at 7pm, and proceed to drive 2 hours, arriving home around 9.30 pm.

Thats around 76 hours away, most of it on the road, to spend under 3 hours on stage.

Am I mad? Probably.

Rock Banned

 Kev on stage

It’s that time again. Time to let off steam.  In the post-halcyon days of live music, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find places to play. I’m beginning to feel that in our quest for gigs, we are giving ground, little by little, so that eventually we will cease to be a force to be reckoned with. The majority of our shows are now in the UK, which is something I don’t particularly enjoy, and the greater part of those are for a chain  of resorts that cater to the “older client” . Whilst we get a lot of fans coming along to these shows, they are also populated by senior citizens, whose moaning genes have been seriously activated. They sit there with their fingers in their ears, pulling stupid bloody faces, then they get up and walk out. What exactly is it about BC SWEET-Glam rock from the 70’s that they think they will like? Why do they come here? It’s not a Mantovani weekend, so why do they even sit in here to listen?  They could just go and play bowls or something. Or sleep.

Of course, the irony is, these 70-somethings were only around 30 when the songs were hits, 19 years younger than I am, and I’m playing the stuff!! What is it that makes people forget their youth and turn into miserable old gits?  I would like to be shot before that happens please.

Plus, I fear the band is taking decisions that diminish our stature, like sometimes agreeing to perform 2 sets. It reduces us to some kind of cabaret, and I just don’t want that. If they don’t want to book us, fine, but I havent worked all these years to be used as wallpaper for the evening. We do an hour show plus encores, that what we do, take it, or leave it. We are loud. It is rock. Take it or leave it.

Of course we may be banned for taking a stand, but If I cant do it properly, then I’d rather not do it at all.

Storm at Sunup

One of my fellow bloggers, Lisa, was commenting recently on the Presentations Miki and I do which involve my poetry and music, and her paintings. I thought today I’d put an example of that. This is one of those we have presented in our shows recently. In the Gallery, they are available to buy as a framed picture with an accompanying CD of the poem narrated by me against the backdrop of my musical composition.

Click on the Player below the picture to hear the poem and music.

Storm at Sunup

Storm at sunup

How wild the wind!
The leaves are playthings in its grasp
Torn from branch
And swept up in its arms at last

The stillness of the night recedes
And sunup brings the wind and his misdeeds
Tugging, pulling, unseen fingers
Pry the tiles from tops of houses
Old men´s wildly flapping trousers

Ladies hold their bonnets tight
And dogs all yelp and bark in fright
The playful wind rushes across,
the hillside, ruffling the moss
and heather, pulling at the trees
it tries to rip them root and branch
from ancient soil before it leaves

An amber sky that heralds suns arrival
forms a backdrop to the black crow´s cry
„storm at sunup, fly, my brothers, fly!”

B S Wattenbuttel

I dabbled a little in nonsense verse when writing the song STRAWBERRY HOUSE, and decided to take it a little further with this little offering about a strange man:

B.S. Wattenbuttel

B.S.Wattenbuttel lived in a room
That he kept very clean with an imaginary broom
He would sweep all the dust and the cobwebs away
With a wave of his hand, but just the same, they would stay
And the days turned to months and the months turned to years
And B.S.Wattenbuttel was up to his ears
In the dust and the cobwebs he thought he’d removed
He feared he might die, and so it was proved
There was no fuss or inquest when he was found dead
For B.S.Wattenbuttel never got out of bed.

Yeah, I know…..I set this blog up a zillion lifetimes ago, and what have I posted? Yep, that’s right. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. But you know what? All good things come to those who wait, or should that be “those who waitress?…..” well, whatever, but I thought, being as I slip and slide through the wordpress blogosphere dropping a word of wisdom or wit here, a snide comment there, I thought it only fair to have a little something for people to latch onto when they click on my name. Indeed, dear reader, if you would click on my website link HERE, I can show you delights you had only dreamed of in the field of music and art!! And it should go some way to excusing my tardiness in actually getting this blog up and (I hesitate to say running) ….ambling. By way of an apology, I’m going to be publishing the occasional short story on here for your delectation. Enjoy!
